According to
family legend Walter Samuel committed
suicide by hanging himself in the outhouse at
the back of 'The Goat Public House' at Strupshaw,
Norfolk during his time as landlord. - April
4, 1917 - January 12, 1920.
A
search of records, papers and inquests have
not been able to confirm this. I have not been
able to find any record of his death either
apart from the one listed.
My grandmother
Ethel Daisy Read recalls leaving The
Goat public house (now The Countryman) with
all the family belongings on a horse and cart
and moving to Sprowston (she was recorded later
as living in Shipfields)
At the time
of Ethel Daisy's wedding in 1927 her
father Walter Samuel Read was recorded
on her marriage certificate as being ‘deceased’
(was this true?), Although I do believe Ethel
thought so.
I have a theory,
after talking to an edlery Lingwood villager
(Cecil Tree) back in the mid 1970's who new
him when he was a young boy, told me ( in his
words) " he was messing around with the
women at the post office and used to drink a
lot" so if this were to be true I would
imagine things were not that good at home. With
that in mine and seeing that both Walter
and Susannah had applied for a copy of
their birth certificates at the same time in
1918, I wonder if they had in mind emigrating
and in the next few months things at home got
worst and Walter decided to go it alone
or maybe with someone else! What we do know
is by January 12, 1920 Robert Knights became
the next landlord, so what ever happened to
Walter must have happened in the last
few months of 1919..
Would Susannah
have told her children or people round her that
her husband had run off or to save face, that
he was dead?. - Just a theory, perhaps one day
we will come up with some facts to find out
what really happened to Walter. - Ray
Taylor
I do have a
postcard (below) which as you can see has a
picture of a 1st World War soldier, on the back
it has been heavily scribbled over but on close
scrutiny I can just make out what looks like
'TO ETHEL FROM DADDY' - My
grandmother was about 10 when they had to leave
The Goat Public House so she must have had this
picture before then.
Apparantly there was much ill feeling regarding
what is at the moment Walter's mysterious departure,
hence the scribbling on the back of the postcard.
I ask the question would there realy have been
that amount of anger about a death? Sadness
yes but anger I question. Apparently my grandmother
was not angry enough to throw them away as she
kept these 2 pictures very close to her for
over 64 years until her death at 74. - Sorry
about the quality but this is the best I can
get. -

In 1920
The Read family left their home of the
Strumpshaw Goat public house and on January
1927 Ethel Daisy married. At that time
her address was given as…. 32 Ship
Fields Sprowston, was this renamed Shipfields
from Ship Row? and did they go to live
with Susannah’s mother?
53 Stacey Road, Norwich
Later Susannah Elizabeth lived
with a lady called Hannah Hart known as
Harty. We are not sure if Sussanah shared
the house with her or if she was her housekeeper
but Harty lived in the front room and
Susannah Elizabeth lived in the
back. Harty took a shine to my mother
and if the family visited my mother had
to go with Harty and the others went with
Susannah.
