Bertie Grint
1883 - 1961

Memories.....
Lovely picture of Grandad 'Feet' Grint we used to call him that because he always wrapped his feet around us children, it is the way I always remembered him, he was in his back garden at 43 Motum Road near his outside fish tank - John Grint.

Husband:

Bertie Grint

Born:

October 08, 1883 Wellington Lane, St Giles, Norwich *
Died: March 26, 1962 43 Motum Road, Norwich - age 78
Buried: 1962
Parents 'unknown' - follow mother >>>
&
Elizabeth Maria Smith
*  Wellington Lane is still there today but the houses have long gone. It is the small road running parallel with Grapes Hill (known then as St Giles Hill), only accessible via St Benedicts, in those days the first part of the road was Duck Lane to the junction of Pottergate, the upper section was the Wellington Lane refered to in Bertie's birth certificate. The houses backed onto the old city wall

April 8, 1884 Lincoln Court, Grapes Hill, Norwich. *
Died: June 25, 1936 Thr Lodge, Bowethorpe Rd, Norwich age 52
Buried: 1936 'The Lodge' is The West Norwich Hospital
Parents Alfred-Alton-Jelley
&
Naomi Potter
* I have still to locate Lincoln's Court/Yard but it appears that it was in the same area that Bertie was born . It could be that Rose and Bertie new each other as children or went to school togther.

Above is an old picture that I have spent hours repairing of Bertie & Rose with some of their children
My grandmother 'Ivy' is third from the left.
Crooks Place, Norwich - 1915

The baby on Rose's lap is Len, he was born August 13, 1914, so I think this will safely date the picture as 1915.

Something I found on the internet which gives some idea of what these properties were like. Crooks Place was at the top of what we now known as St Stephens the other side of Chaplefield Road behind the Multi York Store.
'The houses in Crooks Place were two up two down Georgian slums off Nicholas Street, in the “new city” but better known as Crooks Place. This area suffered extensively from bombing in the Second World War although, luckily, people living at the St. Stephens Square end of the street escaped damage. The houses was in a poor enough state without the the bombing, they were riddled with mice. These poor creatures must have been terrified by the explosions because we could hear them racing up and down the walls behind the crumbling lath and plaster. Indeed my Mum was more terrified of those mice than she was of the Luftwaffe and they scared her enough. The stairs rose at a dizzyingly vertical angle and had very narrow treads. the backyard had communal facilities'.
I have found some mention that children went to school in Crooks Place, an infants school which had a fish pond as well as Bignold School. There are also other stories that when these properties were demolished the families were moved to Mile Cross or The Larkman. Many families had to spend the first night in their new home without their furniture as it had to be fumigated.

When I told my father (Raymond Ernest Taylor) that I had Rose's death certificate he told me that each day he used to take his grandmother a cake in her final days, as they only lived a short walk from the hospital. - Ray Taylor

Rose Eva Jelley had 3 sisters - some records show this but I have no concrete confirmation. - Need checking
1/ Lily Jelley, born 1884 married unknown? and had two daughters: Doreen Jelley born 19?? & Valerie Jelley born 1940 who married Brian Hipperson born 1937 - Why do Lily Jelly's daughters have her surname?
