May 20 - Baptism record at St Botolph Barford
Thomas Fisher
Son of Thomas Fisher and his wife Mary
Searching for
a marriage record in Mattishall for a Thomas
Fisher to an Ann unknown has given
no results however looking a bit further a field
I have found what I think could be them in the
next village of Welborne. This seems to be the
best fit so far as Thomas and Ann Key were married
there in Nov 1777, the following year there
was a baptism record of a daughter Mary baptized
in April 1778. There appears to be be no more
children born to this couple at Welborne so
it seems they then moved to Mattishall where
they had more children which are listed above.
If only one record were to have Ann's surname,
it would answer the question.
1777: Nov 18

We don't know if Thomas or Ann
were actually born at Welborne for 'of this
parish' could mean that they had both been living
there for over a year, meaning they are currently
residing in the parish - a few clergymen would
actually check if they had been working there
for a full year to established a settlement
right, and, if their residence was less, most
wouldn't bother. Some might give the parish
where they are from but for Thomas and Ann nothing
was written.
The fact that they were bachelor
and spinster means that they were born in about
the average age of marriage. On the whole, the
average age then was in the mid twenties - though
his status and employment could make a difference.
If he is in a craft trade, he would have been
apprenticed and marriage under 21 was not normally
allowed. Otherwise, his financial status counts,
if he was something professional, he could have
been making enough to marry earlier.
