Thomas Fisher
About 1755 - 1829
Going back further is now getting more tricky as records are far less informative and there are lots of parish records still to be transcribed. Sadly occupations and family links were not considered important so records are in the main very basic.
In this case searching for the parents of Thomas has led us to Barford. This has been the closest link and strangely enough there are several coincidences in relation to family links to Mattishall - basically at this moment in time it is all speculation and only my way of looking at things so please check it out yourself.
The next page 'Ancestors' contain many records that have been collected and I have tried to place them in some sort of order hoping that some family link will form at sometime in the future.

Thomas Fisher
Son of Thomas Fisher and his wife Mary

Searching for a marriage record in Mattishall for a Thomas Fisher to an Ann unknown has given no results however looking a bit further a field I have found what I think could be them in the next village of Welborne. This seems to be the best fit so far as Thomas and Ann Key were married there in Nov 1777, the following year there was a baptism record of a daughter Mary baptized in April 1778. There appears to be be no more children born to this couple at Welborne so it seems they then moved to Mattishall where they had more children which are listed above. If only one record were to have Ann's surname, it would answer the question.

1777: Nov 18 - Marriage record
All Saints Church Welborne
Thomas Fisher - Bachelor of this parish made his mark
Ann Key - Spinster of this parish - by Banns made her mark
Fathers: No fathers are recorded
Thomas and Ann made their mark
Witness: William Beckett made his mark and Robert Liddelow signed
Entry Number 26
Thomas and Ann had children: see below

We don't know if Thomas or Ann were actually born at Welborne for 'of this parish' could mean that they had both been living there for over a year, meaning they are currently residing in the parish - a few clergymen would actually check if they had been working there for a full year to established a settlement right, and, if their residence was less, most wouldn't bother. Some might give the parish where they are from but for Thomas and Ann nothing was written.

The fact that they were bachelor and spinster means that they were born in about the average age of marriage. On the whole, the average age then was in the mid twenties - though his status and employment could make a difference. If he is in a craft trade, he would have been apprenticed and marriage under 21 was not normally allowed. Otherwise, his financial status counts, if he was something professional, he could have been making enough to marry earlier.

1829: Jun 04 - Burial record - Thomas Fisher aged 74 years
All Saints Churchyard Mattishall

1849: Dec 13 - Order for the removal of Thomas Fisher a Labourer, & Sarah his wife, and Charlotte Elizabeth aged 9 yrs & William Isaac aged 6 yrs their children, from the Parish of St. Michael at Thorn, Norwich to Mattishall.- Signed: Henry Woodcock Mayor, John Wright JPs

Examination: Born in Mattishall about 47 years ago, son of Thomas Fisher, deceased, Labourer, & his wife Elizabeth who were married at the Parish of Mattishall about Midsummer about 51 years ago. Father died in Brandon Parva about 43 years ago, for about 3 months before his death received about five shillings a week from Mr. Mendham Acting Overseer for Mattishall & Mattishall paid his funeral exps. About a year after his father's death, Elizabeth the widow and Thomas (the son) together with three other children were sent to Gressenhall. After leaving the Workhouse Thomas was placed as a Town Boy for a year to Mr. John Read, Farmer of Mattishall, and served him for a year. Evidence of another spell in the Workhouse at Gressenhall 17 years ago and receiving money from Mr. Howes Overseer during the winter about 14 years ago. All when he was residing in Norwich. Married in July 1828 at the Parish Church of Costessey to Sarah by whom he had three children, two of whom are living with him. Wife Sarah confined to her bed by sickness and would probably have a permanent disability. - Order suspended. Signed: Henry Woodcock Mayor, John Wright

Thomas and Sarah do not show up on the 1851 and 1861 census - maybe in the workhouse!
But Sarah does turn up in 1871:
