William
Luxton 1807 - Willaim was baptised in Brushford
on May 28, 1807
William (1807 - 1886)
was privately baptised at Brushford on May 28,
1807 and received into the Church on February
21, 1808. William married Mary Pike
after banns at Brushford on April 15, 1830 and
both signed the register with their mark. He
was a blacksmith, and the 1841 census at Ford
Tything, Newton St Cyres lists William 30, smith,
Mary his wife 30 and their children George 10,
Emma 6, William 4, and Mary 1.
Whites' Directory (1850) records William
Luxton, Blacksmith, Newton St Cyes.
It is thought that William and
his family left their Devon roots to seek work
as blacksmiths/farriers with army horses. The
1851 census for Scotch Row, High Road, Leytonstone,
London lists William Luxton age 44, blacksmith,
Mary age 44 and their children, his wife Mary
was staying with her sister Jane (see 1851 Census
below) while Jane's Husband was abroad in Canada.

Hi -
I have recently found your webiste
which is very interesting. I am a
descendent of William Luxton
and Mary Pike. My mother who
is now 84 is the daughter of Alfred
Ernest Luxton and Louise Dorothy
Nelson.
Alfred was the son of William Luxton
and Susan Steele. With a family
that size money was short and they
often did a 'moonlight flit' with
all their posessions on a cart.
Alfred and his wife were both deaf
and dumb and Louise Dorothy
only had one leg. Life was hard for
them with their six children and they
received a lot of help from the Salvation
Army.
Percy married Caroline Elizabeth
Barrett in 1921.
I have been told that Kate married
someone called Bainbridge and had
a sweet shop in Bow London and that
Percy moved to France I am not sure
how true this is.
Alfred was estranged from his brothers
and sister in later years so not many
family stories have been passed down
and we have no family photographs.
Thank you for sharing all the information
you have online. - Jean Driver

Samuel Luxton - (1841 - 1907) - Samuel
was born at Newton st Cyres on September
3, 1841. In 1841 he is listed as a 29
year old farrier, residing with his parents
at High Road, Leyton. There is no mention
of his wife Elizabeth Crossingham who
he had married at St Johns' Church in
Straford Essex, on April 10, 1864. The
couple had already separated and his wife
Elizabeth, a 45 year old servant to Anthony
Howell, a wine merchant in the High Street,
Romford, described herself as unmarried
in the 1881 census, She bigamously married
James Bailey, a widower and coachman
of 10 Byford Terrace, Custom House after
banns at the Parish Church of Holy Trinity,
Barking Road, Essex on November 4, 1883,
Samuel Luxton was a 64 year old
homeless farrier, when he died at Whitechapel
Infirmary, Whitechapel, London on February
3, 1907. The couple had three children...

Elizabeth Luxton born 1845 at
Leytonstone, in the May of 1864 was

of 33 Radnor Street, St Lukes, when
she married Thomas Walter Jackson
19, farrier of 4 Alfred Place, Gee Street,
St Lukes at Thomas', Bethnal Green on
September 21, 1884. The fact she describes
herself as the daughter of George
Luxton farrier, suggests she had
cut herself off from contact with her
real father Samuel. - Elizabeth
Jackson died aged 58 at St Colunbas'
Hospital, Hampstead, London on March
30, 1924. She was a grandmother to Mrs
Gladys Doyle of Burgess Hill, West

1876, when she was nine, to work as
a scullery maid, in the Red Lion Public
House. She is listed in the 1881 census
as a 14 year old servant with an inn
keeper, William Slade and family
at Little Silver, Shobrooke. Emma
Mary Luxton 21, spinster of Shobrooke,
described as the daughter of William
Luxton , blacksmith (in reality
he was her uncle or perhaps grandfather).
married John Fey a 43 year old
carpenter at Shobrooke on December 24,
1889. She died aged 84 at 27 The Village
Shobrooke on October 3, 1951. Her grandson
Brian Phillips writes "Emma
was a remarkable woman. She had no education,
never owned anything of value, was married
to the Shobrooke master carpenter on
Christmas day 1889, gave birth to my
Aunt the following day, was widowed
with seven children in 1908 and lived
until 1951".
