Robert Luxton
1810 - Roberet was baptised in Brushford on
January 1, 1810
Robert Luxton (1810 -
1900) the third son of George Luxton (1770
- 1848) and his wife Elizabeth Wreford
of Steers Cottage, Brushford established a large
family branch.
Robert was baptised at Brushford on January
1, 1810. As Robert Luxton of Eggesford
(sojourner in Winkleigh) he married Rebecca
Hammett Ware at Winkleigh after banns on
November 17, 1835. The late Gladys Mary Luxton,
his great granddaughter wrote - "Robert
left Brushford when quite young, with a maid
servant whom he married. They settled in the
village of Newton St Cyres, he having been been
disowned by his family. He was employed by Squire
Quicke". Oral traditions usually contain
a speck of truth, but if Robert was
disowned by his family not all his relatives
were opposed to the wedding, which was witnessed
by George Luxton, who was perhaps his
father or brother. Initially too, the young
couple settled in Coldridge and then Brushford
where in 1841 Robert aged 30, agricultural
labourer, lived at Little Brushford, with Rebecca
25 and their children Mary 5 and William
1. Their eldest son Robert age 3 is listed
in the same census staying with his maternal
grandmother Sarah Ware, aged 60 in Winkleigh.
The couple moved with their growing family some
time about 1843, to Fishers Cottage in Newton
St Cyres, where he was employed by Squire
Quicke who resided at the stuccoed Georgian
Newton House. Robert and his family was
still at Fishes Cottage in 1861, but ten years
later were at Clay Hill and at West Town in
1881 and 1981. The West Town, Newton St Cyres
census records, Robert 84, and his wife
Rebecca 81. Their granddaughter Florence
Ellen Luxton aged 15, a laundress, lived
with the old couple. Rebecca Hammett Luxton
died aged 81, in the winter of 1894, while
Robert Luxton aged 90, died in St Thomas,
Exeter in the winter of 1900.
"BRUSHFORD, a small parish
in the Taw valley, 5 miles S. by W. of Chulmleigh,
has only 144 souls, and about 1000 acres of
land, nearly all the property, and in the occupation
of the Luxton family, to whom it has belonged
since the reign of Elizabeth, previous to which
the manor and tithes belonged to Hartland Abbey.
The Church (St. Mary,) is a small structure,
with a tower and three bells. George Luxton,
Esq., is impropiator of the tithes and patron
of the perpetual curacy, valued at £51,
and now held by the Rev. John Luxton, B.A."
[From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
"NEWTON ST. CYRES, a pleasant
village, on the south side of the vale of the
river Creedy, 4½ miles N.W. of Exeter,
and 3½ E.S.E. of Crediton. Its parish
contains 1234 souls, and 4305 acres of land,
rising in bold undulations from the river, and
including the tythings of Ford, Norton, and
Smallbrook, the hamlet of Winscott, and many
scattered houses. . . . John Quicke, Esq., is
lord of the manor of Newton, and resides at
Newton House, where his family has been seated
since the reign of Elizabeth. . . . The Church
(St. Cyres,) stands on a fine eminence, and
has a tower and five bells. It was built in
the 12th or 13th century, and has a large burial
ground surrounded by fine lime trees, &c.
The interior was recently repewed, in 1831,
and has several monuments of the Northcote and
Quicke families, one of which has effigies of
Jacob Northcote Esq., and his two wives, who
died in the 17th century. The vicarage, valued
in K.B. at £16. 15s. 5d., and in 1831
at £425, is in the patronage of John Quicke,
Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. E.H. Quicke,
B.A. . . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory
