Big Gathering At Funeral At Mattishall....
Methodists gathered in large numbers from the
villages around East Dereham at the funeral
at Mattishall on Saturday of Mr L. King. For
over 60 years Mr King's name has been well-known
in every Methodist home throughout the East
Dereham Circuit. Although he journeyed far and
wide on Sunday preaching the Gospel, yet he
never neglected his home church, and it was
very rare to find Mr King absent from a week
night service in Mattishall Methodist Church.
He also frequently took services in the Congregational
Church and at the last united Armistice service
in Mattishall Church Mr King read the lessons.
Before the interment in the cemetery, the body
was borne into the Methodist Church by Messers,
A Tuttle, W. W. Lusher, James and Isiah Pearce,
H. Palmer and J. Purple. The service was conducted
by the Rev. J. Whitaker-bond, Rev J. C. Mantripp
(Wymondham), Rev David Graham (Vicar of Mattishall),
and the Rev F. B. Dennes (Congregational Pastor).
The hymns " How sweet the name of Jesus
sounds" and "Loved with everlasting
love" were sung by the crowed assembly
with Mrs N. Garner accompanying. The lessons
were read by the Rev J. Whitaker-Bond and the
Vicar, and the Rev J. C. Mantripp, in a short
address made a touching reference to the devoted
Christian Life that Mr King had lived. His Loyalty
and constant service were out- standing, and
truly it could be said that he had faithfully
served his day and generation. Continuing, the
minister said that his personal contact with
Mr King took him back to over 40 years ago,
when as minister he found Mr King one of a group
of vigorous and live preachers with enthusiasm
for evangelistic work unbounded.
Prayer was offered by the Rev Dennes. The cortege
then proceeded to the cemetery.......
There then follows a long list
of Mourners......
The committal service at the grave was taken
by Rev J. Whitaker-Bond, and prayer was offered
by the Rev J. Eric Thorp. Among the many lovely
floral tributes was a wreath from members of
Mattishall Methodist Church.
The coffin was inscibed: " Lebble King,
died March 29th, 1937, aged 86 years.
Police-constable Nightingal direced the traffic
as the prcession moved to the cemetery.
