Herbert was to return to Mattishall to take over his father's shop in South Green after his father William Mann Horne (1858) tragically died a slow and agonising death 3 days after falling from his horse and trap in 1921.

Herbert gave up the shop in the 1930's and became the Postman for Mattishall and Mattishall Burgh, his nephew Russell William Horne (1929) remembers that he used to help him on his rounds. Russell said he would often use a bike but in the winter snow he would walk, his round aslo included Clippings Green and in thick snow it was quite a trek.

After leaving the shop Herbert lived in what was called Busby's Cottages on Church Plain. It is said that at Christmas time the front room was cleared and he would pluck and dress fowl for Christmas dinner plates.

Mattishall Local Preacher
Late Mr. Herbert Horne - The funeral service took place at Mattishall Methodist Church on Monday for Mr. Herbert Horne of Church Plain, Mattishall who was 68. He was village postman for 12 years, retiring in 1950 owing to ill health. Mr. Horne had been a local preacher for 31 years. The service was conducted by the Rev. A.B. Gower's superintendent minister, East Dereham Circuit, assisted by Rev. E.S. Earle. There then follows a long list of mourners
