We find through the census information of 1891 when Flora was 14 she was in Mattishall were it is assumed she would be active helping in the family home as well as her father’s business. Sometime after this Flora left the village, for in 1911 we find her at 13 Grosvenor Crescent, St Leonards-on-Sea near Hastings were she was a Domestic Parlour Maid for William Simpson, his wife Lucy and their three daughters. At the same address also working with Flora was a Childs Nurse and a Domestic Cook. Was this a job her Uncle Herbert Edward Horne (1866) had found for her as he was also living at that time in St Leonards-on-Sea where he had a Bakery Shop at 25 Bexhill Road which is less then a mile from Grosvenor Crescent?

Flora never married – Apparently Flora was a manageress at Dexter’s Bakery Store in the High Street Staines which was situated next to the first Masonic Centre in the providence of Middlesex. She was actually living at number 63 High Street which we assume was part of Dexters’ premises. Not a lot can be found regarding Dexter’s on the internet apart from one person memories “Dexter’s was a bakers well frequented by many, I can still taste and smell their produce to this day especially the pasties” As well as their store Dexter’s were also renowned for outside catering, for example weddings, parties and conferences. This is where Flora came in as she was the manager of that side of things and apparently ran it like clockwork.

Flora was quite a formidable character and everything had to be just so. She would spend some of her holidays back home at Mattishall where she would arrive by train at Yaxham Station. Her brother Arthur Horne (1889) would pick her up in his car and as well as her cases she would always have 3-4 hats boxes. There was always mixed emotions when was coming to stay for on one hand she would bring gifts of cakes and biscuits in small tins for everyone and on the other she was very strict and regimental. She would often borrow a bicycle from somewhere and round up the children to bike with her to Dereham where she would treat them.
When she retired Flora moved back to Mattishall and lived in the middle cottage in Welgate.

1987: Died at Eckling Grange
